Backpack Goes on Spring Break: An Affordable Trip to Orlando

Have you seen the prices to go to Disney World lately? Unbelievable, right? The cost for a couple to enjoy a day at Magic Kingdom is $296.08. Add a couple of kids to the mix, plus food, drinks, a few souvenirs and transportation and you are looking at a small fortune. Though I can agree that a day at any Disney theme park is worth it for everyone to experience, I am not convinced it needs to be a yearly occurrence. Luckily, it is possible to experience an affordable trip to Orlando.

Enjoy an affordable vacation by staying just outside of Orlando (keep it extra budget-friendly by renting through Airbnb). You will still be able to experience the joys of the beach, the thrill of theme park rides, the taste of good food and drinks, and perfect pool days.

While staying in Winter Garden, 16 miles out, our trip was full of relaxation. Not to mention the avoidance of 80-minute amusement park lines, overpriced hot dogs, and screaming kids—for the most part.

The Best Experience

Cocoa Beach; located an hour drive from Orlando, Cocoa Beach is a beautiful 6-mile stretch of sand leading into the wavy, salt-water ocean. Its family-friendly atmosphere will have you surrounded by sunbathers, sand castles, seashells, and boogie boards. The beach town offers a variety of restaurants and the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop to round out an entertaining day. Pack up your cooler, an umbrella, a few beach chairs and you are well on your way to a relaxing day at the beach.

Tips:

  • Parking: there are over 1,000 metered spaces across a handful of parking lots. Most will cost $2.50 per hour or $15 for the entire day. Pay at a kiosk before walking down to the beach ahead of you. More information here.
  • Be somewhat discrete with your alcoholic beverages. They are not technically allowed, and they do drive around in little jeeps to check, but no one seems to pay much attention. Live a little.
  • Save yourself the panic of oh my gosh, the ocean took the kid. Throw a bright colored hat on them so they are easy to spot and protected from the sun. Best thing I ever bought my niece!

Honorable Mentions

Old Town; Head over to a simple and entertaining theme park in Kissimmee, Florida, offering 18 acres of rides, shops, restaurants, and entertainment. This spot will give you theme park memories without the outrageous lines and astronomically priced tickets.

Both the young and old can enjoy an experience here with its old-fashioned vibe and classic fun. Walk along the cobblestone streets amongst the bright lights while grabbing an ice cream or beer in between rollercoasters and go-karts. Thrill-seekers can experience the slingshot or tame things down with a ride around the Ferris Wheel.

Tips

  • The most budget-friendly way to enjoy Old Town is a full day that gives unlimited access to rides for around $60/person. Otherwise, if you only want to spend a couple of hours here (it’s the perfect night time activity) you will pay $5-10 each for traditional rides.
  • Open containers are allowed while you walk the streets. Grab a huge beer from Southern Breeze for only $6.50 – Cheers!

Restaurants

Rock & Brews Restaurant; A great spot to enjoy the weather on the patio and choose a beer from the extensive draft list featuring both local and international selections. The patio is complete with a bar, lounge areas, live music on the weekends, and first-come, first-serve seating. This setup makes it easier to grab a table outside instead of putting your name down for inside.

Polish off a few beers, enjoy the Rock & Roll music and memorabilia and be sure to dig into the menu. Enjoy made-from-scratch comfort food with local ingredients, including ribs and burgers. (Dogs are allowed and kids can even drink their kiddie cocktails while sitting at the bar.)

Miller’s Ale House; If you are looking for a place to grab a beer with a big plate of cheesy nachos while watching the game, look no further. A big space with a bar at its center and tables surrounding it, the building is packed from left to right. Sports fans cheer on their team while watching one of the big TVs. And beer lovers take advantage of their 75 different beers. (Ale is their middle name, as they say!) This resturant/bar was extremely affordable and offers daily specials.

TIPS

  • Orlando airport is an absolute circus. This is Disney World on steroids. Get there early and don’t forget to pack your patience.
  • Take advantage of the pool. Another low budget day that allows you to enjoy the water and read a good book.
  • As the song goes, Wear Sunscreen.

A trip to the Orlando-area doesn’t have to cost as much as a knee replacement. There are plenty of ways to keep the fun alive with your family by enjoying the beach, catching some sun, and enjoying theme park rides.
