Good ol’ Lincoln, Nebraska. Home to lots of corn and honestly the nicest people you will ever meet. A college town through and through, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and more specifically, the historic Haymarket District, is the heart of the city. From fun bar hopping and good food to shopping and culutral attractions, here are the best things to do in Lincoln, Nebraska!
Football. Runza’s. Corn. Let’s Talk Lincoln, NEBRASKA.
The Best Things to Do in Lincoln, Nebraska – Haymarket
We have to start with what makes this city tick, and there’s only one right answer…
Nebraska Football Game
The heart and soul of Nebraska: FOOTBALL! If you’re taking a trip to Lincoln and the University of Nebraska campus, I highly recommend a home game at Memorial Stadium. As one of the largest stadiums in the United States, and (very nice) passionate fans, it’s one of the top things to do in Lincoln and an overall great experience. Win or lose, these fans show up!
We went in as the away team and were treated so kindly from the moment we arrived, including inside the stadium. The day we were there was a HOT ONE but our team kicking butt (and some concession stand items—get a Runza, more below) helped us out.
Not football season? Check out the basketball court—Pinnacle Bank Arena for a different sporting experience.
And here are the best things to do in Lincoln, Nebraska before and after the game!
Bars & Restaurants in Lincoln, Nebraska – Haymarket
The Haymarket area of Downtown Lincoln is a vibrant and fun place with so many bars and restaurants a stone’s throw away from each other. It’s perfect on game day or any weekend of the year when you’re looking to bar hop near the University Campus. A few recommendations:
Tipsy Tina’s Taco Cantina
Located a short walk from the stadium, Tipsy Tina’s is an awesome place to party. They have 140 types of Tequila, a lengthy taco menu, and an outdoor patio located in the heart of all the fun! We picked this spot before heading into the game on Saturday morning and everyone had a great time while enjoying the weather and vibes with plenty of beer flowing. I would definitely come back!
Brewksy’s Haymarket
Your classic sports bar to catch a game and drink a few too many beers. Brewsky’s is one of the best places in Haymarket and an easy place to have fun! Their outdoor patio includes TVs (my favorite!) and the inside is spacious with a cool vibe and live music. Pair your beers with classic bar food and surround yourself with nice people and you’re sure to have a good time.
LeadBelly
No doubt a top food spot in the area. This spacious eatery serves up unique cocktails like Butterbeer and Jargarita’s, plus a menu with a twist on the classics including burgers with a variety of fun toppings, Philly egg rolls, and orange chicken poppers. The 130-year-old building makes for a cool atmosphere and casual setting whether you sit inside or out. Stop in to party after a game or simply for a bite to eat, and you’ll enjoy your experience at LeadBelly.
JTK Cuisine & Cocktails
While all of the above are great places to party, eventually you will be looking for a toned-down, chic atmosphere where you can have a glass of wine and a steak. JTK Cusine & Cocktails is a great option. A fun date night spot, sit in an elegant dining area or out on their string-lit outdoor patio.
While the ribeye was good, not great, the real winners were the wine (even just happy hour cab!) and the peach cobbler in a relaxing setting.
The Mill Coffee & Tea
Out of the places we were able to explore in Lincoln, Nebraska, The Mill stands out! I really enjoyed this comfy coffee shop and this place is a great way to start the day. The wood-covered inside includes plenty of seating, coffee beans for sale, as well as mugs and other swag. Enjoy your coffee or tea inside or out on the patio and add a tasty pastry to go with it!
Runza
Okay, who has heard of a Runza!? They are apparently as Nebraska as it gets and I had never heard of it, but tried my first one! It’s a bread pocket stuffed with beef, vegetables, and cheese, plus gives the fast food chain its name. Overall, I’d give it a 5/10 (a little dough-y.) I did love that you could get fries AND onion rings! Plus, great homemade ranch to go with it.
There are several fast food locations a short drive away. And the best way to experience Nebraska apparently (outside of football), so you gotta hit up a Runza while you’re here.
Parks & Outdoor Activities in Lincoln, Nebraska – Haymarket
Looking for a free thing to do in the area or just somewhere to get into the great outdoors (that’s not a football game or outdoor patio?) You’re in luck because you have a few options that are great for the whole family.
Nebraska State Capitol Building
You’re in the Capital City of Nebraska! Walk over to the Nebraska State Capitol for a little photo op and maybe even a tour to explore the grounds and learn a little history.
Bill Harris Iron Horse Park
Iron Horse Park is an open play area with historic touches including a huge restored train and a large water tower. It’s an interesting place and an easy spot to let the kids get some energy out or get your steps in. It’s not a typical park with a jungle gym but everyone will still enjoy the atmosphere and historic things to see. We strolled in on a calm evening before dinner and thought it was pretty neat.
Farmer’s Market
Everybody loves a good market! If you are here in season, May through mid-October, check out the Haymarket Farmers Market where you will find a variety of vendors and goods for sale. Buy fresh produce, arts and crafts, wood-crafted items, plus food and coffee while you peruse.
Shopping in Lincoln, Nebraska – Haymarket
There are an extensive amount of shops in Haymarket no matter what you are looking for. Check out a full list of Haymarket shops and/or just walk up and down the blocks and stop in different boutiques and small businesses.
Best of Big Red
While we didn’t do a ton of shopping while exploring Lincoln, I still needed to hit a gift shop for a little something from the Cornhusker State. We chose Best of Big Red which, of course, you will find tons of Nebraska sports clothing and memorabilia. As a Michigan fan, I wasn’t opting for that. But I did find a couple of cool things including this sticker for my water bottle to commemorate our trip! CORN!
More Things to Do in the Lincoln, Nebraska – Haymarket Area
There are plenty of other fun things to do. A couple of top options:
- Museum of American Speed: a unique museum that displays artifacts of American automotive history.
- Lincoln Children’s Museum: three levels dedicated to interactive exhibits, and educational activities for kids.
- Lincoln Children’s Zoo: Another option for kids, get up close and personal with the animals at the zoo!
Where to Stay in Lincoln, Nebraska – Haymarket
Need a place to stay? I definitely recommend the Hilton Garden Inn Lincoln. It’s right downtown in the action of Haymarket with so many restaurants, bars, shops, and other places to explore within walking distance. Not to mention, an extremely nice staff—they ever so kindly put my ice packs in the freezer which we would need for baby milk during the next day’s travels. Plus, clean, comfortable rooms, and a nice bar downstairs. You can easily say a good thing or five about this place!
